There are various methods of drilling wells, ranging from those using simple hand tools to drilling at high speeds using sophisticated equipment. Expert welldrillers use various techniques for their job. Here are some common high-tech drilling methods.

Cable Tool Drilling

Also called percussion drilling, the technique comprises lifting and dropping several solid steel drilling bits suspended on a rope. The movements result in cutting, pulverizing and fracturing the ground.

Cable tool drilling is relatively low-cost because of the simplicity and low upfront costs of the machines used in this drilling method. It, however, takes a long time.

Auger Drilling

This technique involves the use of a 5-foot spiral auger to drill a well hydraulically. The auger joint is severed after it has dug its length and another 5-foot one added to bore the well further.

There are various types of auger drilling methods, including hollow, continuous-flight and bucket augers. These are however only suitable for drilling shallow large-diameter wells.

Rotary Drilling

In this technique, a drill bit attached at the end of a drill pipe uses rotation to fracture, dig or scrap your ground. There are various types of rotary drilling, including reverse circulation, air, down-hole hammer and sonic drilling.

The techniques have a high level of automation, high efficiency and flexibility. Rotary drilling operates with minimal noise and vibration and is hence doable anywhere.

These methods are your best bet to the highest level of sanitation. This is because unlike other well construction methods, they introduce no contaminants into your water well. Though costly, these wells go below your aquifer and will assure you of a constant and permanent water supply.
